Why it matters
Preparation can disturb older painted surfaces.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule requires firms doing paid renovation, repair, or painting work that disturbs painted surfaces in pre-1978 homes, child care facilities, and preschools to be certified. Workers must be trained in lead-safe work practices, either by becoming certified renovators or by working under a certified renovator. Project details and applicable exemptions affect whether the rule applies.
This information does not determine whether a project is covered or verify a contractor’s certification. Ask your contractor about applicable requirements and check the EPA’s current guidance before work begins.
